Marketing Isn’t a Funnel. It’s a Root System.

Jun 18, 2025 | Among the Roots

How sustainable growth starts underground.

You’ve seen the diagrams: wide at the top, narrow at the bottom. Traffic → leads → sales. The funnel. And while that model still has its place, I want to offer a different metaphor: one that feels a little less mechanical and a lot more alive.  Because at The Thicket Studio, we don’t see marketing as a funnel. We see it as a root system.

Here’s what that means:

1. Growth doesn’t always look linear.

Roots don’t grow in a perfect sequence. They tangle, spread, double back, and deepen over time.

Just like your audience.
Just like your message.
Just like your business.

Your growth might start with a powerful referral… then a website refresh… then a few social posts that finally resonate. It’s rarely step-by-step, and that’s okay.

2. The best marketing happens below the surface.

What makes someone choose your brand often happens quietly:

The clarity of your words
The trust they feel scrolling your site
The story you told that stayed with them

These aren’t flashy touchpoints. But they matter. And like a healthy root system, they’re what hold everything else in place.

3. Surface-level tactics don’t work if you haven’t tended the roots.

Before the launch. Before the email campaign. Before the SEO.  Ask:

Is our message clear?
Do we know who we’re speaking to?
Is our strategy connected to our values?

Because what happens to growth that isn’t rooted?  It won’t last.

What Rooted Growth Looks Like:

At The Thicket Studio, we help brands:

  • Clarify their voice

  • Align their marketing to real business goals

  • Show up with intention, not overwhelm

  • Build systems that grow with them not against them

This is the foundation of our Brand Strategy and Brand Messaging services—work that makes your growth sustainable. We’re not here to help you go viral. We’re here to help you grow with purpose. Funnels are fine. But if you want growth that holds, spreads, and sustains, start underground. Start at the roots.
